ZyCoV-D is the world's first plasmid-DNA vaccine. Which will be administered intradermally using a needle-less system on Day 0, Day 28 and Day 56.

New Delhi: The company on Wednesday said that Zydus Cadila has started supplying needle-free Covid ZyCov-D vaccine to the government.

“The company has commenced deliveries of its Covid-19 ZyCoV-D vaccine to the Government of India from its newly commissioned state-of-the-art Zydus Vaccine Center of Excellence at Zydus Biotech Park in Changodar, Ahmedabad. This was said in a statement.

Last year, the government ordered 10 million doses of the vaccine for the National COVID-19 Immunization Programme. The company also plans to make this vaccine available in the market.

ZyCoV-D is the world's first plasmid-DNA vaccine. The three-dose vaccine will be given under the skin on days 0, 28 and 56 using a painless, needle-free PharmaJet system called Tropis.

The vaccine will cost £265 per dose and £93 per dose for the applicant, excluding GST. The company said it has signed an agreement with Shilpa Medicare Ltd, a contract manufacturing entity, to manufacture ZyCoV-D doses. It also has an agreement with Enzyme Lifesciences of the Republic of Korea for product licensing and technology transfer for the vaccine.

“Zydus VTEC is producing drug substance for a needle-free DNA plasmid ZyCoV-D vaccine. The production process and transfer of materials during production is automated at the plant, Zydus said in a statement.

The national drug regulator has approved the vaccine for limited emergency use for people aged 12 years and above. The company had earlier announced that its production capacity should be around 10-12 million doses per month.

The Union Health Ministry said that the Zydus vaccine will be initially used in areas with low first dose in Bihar, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. Later the vaccine will be distributed across the country.
